Sticky Web Art
- Play time:
- 10 to 15 minutes
- Setup:
- 5 minutes
- Where:
- Wall or easel

Why it helps
This fun, vertical activity helps your child build strong core and shoulder muscles (Proximal Stability) while refining the tiny movements in their fingers needed for future coloring and writing tasks (Distal Finger Control). Choking risk: pom-poms and googly eyes can be a choking hazard. Stay within arm's reach, and keep them away from children who still put things in their mouths.
Steps
- Choose a clean wall or door. Test a small piece of masking tape first to make sure it peels off without lifting paint.
- Make a web about as tall as your child from six to eight long strips of masking tape, sticky side out, crossing in the middle like spokes. Hold down each end with a small piece of tape pressed over it.
- Ask your child to tear tissue paper into small pieces and crumple them into balls. Set them nearby with the pom-poms and wiggle eyes.
- Invite your child to press the pieces onto the sticky web, reaching up high, down low, and across to the far side.
- Your child can make bugs caught in the web, like a pom-pom with two wiggle eyes pressed on beside it, or choose their own design.
- Talk about the colors and textures as they go. When the web is full, your child can peel the pieces off and decorate it again.
- Peel the tape off the wall slowly when you are done.
Safety tip: Wiggle eyes and pom-poms are small, so stay close and keep them away from mouths and younger siblings. Peel the tape off slowly so it does not lift paint.
