Why it helps
This activity turns a simple paper roll into a fun, homemade gravity game for your child to enjoy at home. By using craft sticks as hurdles, your child will practice steady hands and careful movements to control the marble drop. It helps build the focus needed for writing while giving them a satisfying 'plunge' as the marbles hit the bottom. This game challenges their brain to plan which stick to move first to keep the marbles from falling too fast. It is a great way to work on fine movements in a playful way.
Steps
- Before play, mark three levels on a paper towel roll with a marker, about two inches apart, starting a few inches from the top.
- At each level, snip two slits across from each other with the scissors tip, each as long as a craft stick is wide. Snip two more just below them, a quarter turn around.
- Slide a craft stick through each pair of slits so the two sticks cross inside the roll like an X.
- Tape over the bottom of the roll with masking tape to close it.
- Stand the roll upright in the plastic container and drop five marbles into the top. They will rest on the top X.
- Ask your child to hold the roll steady and slowly pull out the two top sticks. Listen for the marbles to drop to the next level.
- Keep pulling sticks from the top down, one level at a time, until the marbles rest on the tape at the bottom.
- Lift the roll a little and peel away the bottom tape so the marbles plunge into the container.
Safety tip: Marbles are a choking hazard, so keep them away from younger siblings and count them at cleanup. An adult should snip the slits, since scissor tips can slip on the curved roll.
Make it easier
- Snip the slits a little wider so the sticks slide out with less pulling.
- Start with two levels and two marbles so there is less to keep track of.
- Hold the tube steady for your child while they pull each stick.
Make it harder
- Crisscross extra sticks at each level and take turns pulling one at a time without letting a marble drop.
- Pull every stick with the non-dominant hand.
- Predict how many marbles will fall each time, then count them in the container.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child pulls each stick out slowly with a fingertip pinch or yanks it out with the whole hand.
- Watch whether the helper hand keeps the tube upright while the other hand pulls.
- If the clatter of falling marbles is too loud, set a folded towel in the bottom of the container to soften the sound.
Where this helps in daily life
Pulling something out slowly and steadily is the same control kids use to pull one tissue from a box, slide a card from a deck, and ease a lid off without spilling.
