The Cardboard Box Gear Shifter

Purpose

Helping your child move their hands in different ways is very important for daily tasks. This activity uses a pretend gear shifter to practice turning the wrist. It feels like a real racing game! It builds coordination between both sides of the body. Your child will love feeling like a driver. This helps them get stronger.

Activity Steps

Steps:

  • Find a medium cardboard box and keep the lid open.
  • Tape an empty paper roll vertically to the center of the bottom.
  • Use markers to draw five colorful circles around the paper roll base.
  • Label the circles with numbers one to four and the letter R.
  • Ask your child to hold the box steady with one hand.
  • Use the other hand to tilt the paper roll to touch circle number one.
