The Taped Paper Roll Wind-Up
Purpose
This fun game helps your child learn to use both hands together in a coordinated way. By wrapping yarn around a paper roll, they practice rotating their wrists and using their fingers to guide the string. This mimics the movements needed for dressing, like zipping a jacket. It also builds distal finger control, which is the foundation for holding a pencil correctly later on. Your child will love watching the roll become colorful as they work their hand muscles. It is a simple way to boost focus and fine motor skills using everyday items you already have at home.
Activity Steps
Steps:
- Use your markers to draw a few small target dots along the paper roll.
- Cut a long piece of yarn, about three feet in length.
- Use a small piece of masking tape to stick one end of the yarn to the top of the paper roll.
- Ask your child to hold the paper roll with their helper hand.
- Have them use their other hand to slowly wrap the yarn around the roll.
- Encourage them to cover each marker dot as they twist the roll.
- Once the yarn is all wrapped, use another piece of tape to secure the end.
Safety Tip:
Always supervise your child during play to ensure the yarn is used safely. Keep long strings away from the neck area.
