- 5 minutes

Why it helps
This activity helps your child learn to use their hands together. They will use a stocking and clothespins to catch a marble. It is a great way to build strength in the tiny muscles of the hand. It also helps with focus. Following these steps builds coordination too.
Steps
- Lay a long stocking flat on a table and draw three colored bands around the leg with markers. These are the goal zones.
- Hold the stocking up by its top so the leg hangs down.
- Choose a zone. Ask your child to gather the stocking into a narrow bunch just below that zone with one hand, then clip a clothespin across the bunch with the other hand so it closes tightly.
- Have your child drop a marble into the top of the stocking. It rolls down and stops on the clip, right in the zone.
- Next, ask your child to gather and clip a second clothespin the same way, just below the next zone down.
- Squeeze the first clothespin open and take it off so the marble drops into the next zone.
- Keep moving the marble from zone to zone until it reaches the toe. Then trade jobs so your child holds the stocking and you clip.
Safety tip: Marbles are a choking risk, so count them, stay close, and keep them away from younger siblings. Clothespins can pinch, so show your child where to squeeze.
Make it easier
- Gather the stocking into a bunch for your child, so they only need to squeeze and clip the clothespin.
- Use a ping pong ball instead of a marble, which is easier to feel and trap through the stocking.
- Use just two zones, close together near the top of the stocking, so each move is short.
Make it harder
- Call out a zone, then have your child squeeze the marble through the stocking to that spot before clipping.
- Use two clothespins to trap the marble between them in the middle zone.
- Have the non-dominant hand squeeze the clothespins while the dominant hand holds the stocking.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child keeps the stocking still with one hand while squeezing the clothespin with the other, or both hands squeeze at once.
- Watch how your child plans the trap: clipping first and then dropping the marble, or trying to clip after the marble falls.
- If the silky stocking feels odd to hold, use a long cotton sock or a cut-off pant leg instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Gripping fabric with one hand while the other pinches or pulls helps kids pull up tights and socks, hold a bag open while filling it, and hang a towel on a hook.
