Why it helps
Scooping treasures out of water and carrying them to a bowl helps your child control the spoon and keep it level, the same steady hand used for self-feeding. The water adds a new feel and a bit of challenge, since treasures float, bob, or slide away from the spoon.
Steps
- Place the foil pan on a flat table and fill it about halfway with cool water.
- Add the treasures. For toddlers, float big items like full-size plastic eggs or large bath toys. For preschoolers, you can drop in a handful of beads.
- Set an empty bowl next to the pan.
- Give your child a sturdy spoon. A big serving spoon works best for eggs and bath toys.
- Ask your child to scoop up one treasure at a time.
- Challenge your child to carry it to the bowl without dropping it, then tip it in.
- Keep going until every treasure is out of the water.
Safety tip: Stay right beside your child during water play, even with shallow water, and wipe up spills. Beads are only for preschoolers who no longer mouth things, and toddlers use items too big to fit in the mouth.
Make it easier
- Put only three or four treasures in the water so the job feels quick to finish.
- Use a spoon with deep sides, like a soup spoon, which holds a bead better.
- Use just an inch of water so the beads are easy to reach.
Make it harder
- Scoop only one color at a time, or two beads in one scoop.
- Use a slotted spoon so the water drains while your child balances the bead.
- Move the bowl to the other side so your child carries each bead across the body.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child tips the spoon to drain the water before carrying, and how level they keep it.
- Watch whether your child holds the spoon in a fist or with the fingers, and which grip spills less.
- If wet hands or cold water bother your child, use lukewarm water and keep a towel close.
Where this helps in daily life
Scooping from a liquid and carrying it level is the same skill kids use to eat soup, eat cereal with milk, and scoop water at bath time.
