The Floating Button Boat Rescue

The Floating Button Boat Rescue

Why it helps

This playful water activity helps your child build the small muscles in their hands while practicing how to follow a sequence. By using tongs to rescue 'passengers' from a floating boat, your child will develop the control needed for writing and using tools like scissors. The wobbly sponge adds a fun challenge for eye-hand coordination, requiring your child to slow down and focus on their movements. It is a wonderful way to turn a sunny afternoon into a learning adventure!

Steps

  • Fill your aluminum foil pan halfway with cool water to create your rescue ocean.
  • Place the sponge in the water so it floats like a tiny boat in the center.
  • Use your markers to draw a different colored circle in each corner of the pan's rim.
  • Drop several colorful buttons into the water around the sponge boat.
  • Ask your child to pick up one button from the water using only their tongs.
  • Tell them to carefully balance the 'rescued' button on top of the floating sponge.
  • Challenge them to fill the sponge with buttons without letting the boat sink!
  • Finally, use the tongs to move each button from the sponge into the matching colored circle on the rim.

Safety tip: Always supervise your child during water play to prevent spills or slips. Small buttons are a choking hazard, so keep them away from younger siblings.

These activities are for home practice and don't replace the guidance of a licensed therapist.
