Heavy Roll Cotton Sweep

Steps:

  • Adult: Fill an empty paper roll halfway with dry rice.
  • Use several layers of masking tape to seal the ends.
  • Child: Stand up and hold the roll with both hands.
  • Place a few cotton balls on a smooth floor.
  • Use the heavy roll to push the balls toward the basket.
  • Try to keep the roll straight so the balls don’t escape.
  • Reach the basket to win the game!

Always supervise your toddler during play. Small rice grains are a choking hazard. Ensure the tape is very secure.

Steps:

  • Start by taping one end of a long ribbon to a flat table using a small piece of masking tape.
  • Stretch the ribbon across the table and place another piece of tape over it every few inches to create a tangled path.
  • Ask your child to use their fingertips to find the edge of each piece of tape.
  • Encourage them to peel the tape up to rescue the ribbon from the table.
  • Once the ribbon is free, show them how to roll it up into a small bundle using both hands.
  • Place the finished ribbon roll into a basket and repeat with a different color!

  • Lay a long strip of butcher paper on the floor to make your landing runway.

  • Place a soft feather in front of them on the paper.
  • Hand your child a straw and ask them to blow air through it.
  • Challenge them to push the feather forward using only their breath.
  • If the feather gets stuck, give them a paper plate to use as a fan.
  • Encourage them to wave the plate to create wind and move the feather.
  • The goal is to get the feather all the way into the basket!
  • Repeat the race and see if they can do it faster each time.

  • Once it is a ball, use the foot to push it into a basket.
  • Switch legs and try to crumple a new sheet of paper!
  • Challenge them to do it faster each time they play.

Steps:

  • Place a large bowl filled with cotton balls on a table in front of your child.
  • Set an empty basket a short distance away on the same table.
  • Hand your child a spoon and show them how to scoop up one cotton ball.
  • Encourage them to carry the ‘cloud’ on the spoon without letting it fall.
  • Ask them to drop the cotton ball gently into the empty basket.
  • Challenge them to fill the entire basket as fast as they can!
  • To add a challenge, move the basket further away to encourage longer reaching.
