Why it helps

This activity helps your child develop fine motor control and precision. By using their thumb and pointer finger to pick up sequins, they are strengthening their pincer grasp. This is very important for learning how to hold a pencil correctly. Drawing on the sides of the container works on hand stability. The sticky surface of the tape provides a fun target for their eyes and hands to work together. Your child will enjoy creating a shiny garden while building the skills needed for school.

Steps

Place the plastic container on a flat table.
Use markers to draw grass and flower stems on the sides of the container.
Put long strips of masking tape across the lid with the sticky side facing up.
Secure the edges of the tape so it stays on the lid.
Have your child pick up one sequin using their thumb and pointer finger.
Press the sequin onto the sticky tape to make a flower on top of the stem.
Continue until the garden on the lid is full of colorful sequin flowers.

Safety tip: Sequins are very small and can be a choking hazard, so please supervise your child closely during play.

Make it easier

Use large sequins or paper hole-punch dots, which are easier to pick up.
Pour the sequins into a flat lid so they spread out instead of piling up.
Fill just one strip of tape instead of the whole lid.

Make it harder

Build each flower with a set number of petals around a center sequin.
Use tweezers to pick up and place each sequin.
Sort the sequins by color first and make a row of flowers in each color.

What to watch for

Notice whether your child picks up sequins with the fingertip pads or tries to scoop them with the whole hand.
Watch for a smart trick: sliding a flat sequin to the edge of the bowl makes it much easier to pinch.
If sequins stick to damp fingers, keep a dry cloth nearby, or let your child pick them up with a damp cotton swab.

Where this helps in daily life

Picking up flat, tiny things with the fingertips is the same pinch kids use to pick up coins, peel a sticker off a sheet, and turn the pages of a book one at a time.
