Why it helps
This activity is a fantastic way to sharpen your child’s concentration and hand control. By building a fuzzy obstacle course inside a basket, they practice how to move their hands together smoothly. It also encourages them to think ahead and plan their next move. This is known as motor planning. It helps with everyday tasks like pouring water or carrying a full tray. Best of all, it feels like a high-stakes game of balance!
Steps
- Find a plastic basket with small holes along the sides.
- Give your child several colorful pipe cleaners.
- Show them how to thread one pipe cleaner through a hole on one side.
- Pull it across the middle and out through a hole on the opposite side.
- Continue adding pipe cleaners at different angles to create a crisscross mesh floor.
- Drop three large beads onto the fuzzy mesh you just created.
- Ask your child to hold the basket handles with both hands.
- Challenge them to tilt the basket gently to roll the beads across the mesh.
- Try to keep the beads on the floor without them falling through the gaps!
Safety tip: Ensure the pipe cleaner ends are tucked in to avoid any small pokes.
Make it easier
- Thread the pipe cleaners close together so the gaps are small and the beads rarely fall through.
- Use big wooden beads or a ping pong ball, which sit on the mesh more easily.
- Thread the first few pipe cleaners for your child and let them add the rest.
Make it harder
- Leave one bigger gap on purpose as a hole to steer around, like a mini golf hazard.
- Roll all three beads into one corner of the basket at the same time.
- Weave each new pipe cleaner over and under the ones already in place.
What to watch for
- Notice how your child threads each pipe cleaner across. Pushing it through one hole and finding a hole on the far side takes planning.
- Watch the size of your child's tilts. The fuzzy mesh slows the beads, so it can take a bigger tilt to start them and a quick correction to stop them.
- Notice what your child does when a bead drops through. Spotting the gap and adding a pipe cleaner there is real problem solving.
Where this helps in daily life
Building something step by step and then testing it uses the same planning kids need to set up a board game, pack a backpack, and follow a simple recipe with a grown-up.
