Why it helps

This fun activity helps your little one build the tiny muscles in their hands. We call it the Confetti Cupcake Decorator. Your child will use a hole puncher to make paper sprinkles. Then, they will use tongs to place them on cupcakes. This is great for learning how to use both hands together. It also helps them get ready for holding a pencil later on. Plus, it is a creative way to play without a big mess!

Steps

  • Use markers to draw three big circles on your cardboard.
  • Glue a baking cup onto each circle to make the cupcake base.
  • Have your child use the hole puncher on colorful paper to make dots.
  • Squeeze some glue into the bottom of each baking cup.
  • Ask your child to pick up the paper dots using the tongs.
  • Challenge them to drop the sprinkles into the cups to decorate the treats.
  • Use their helper hand to keep the cardboard steady while they work.

Safety tip: Always supervise your child during play to ensure safety. Small paper dots can be a choking hazard for younger children.

Make it easier

  • Set the hole puncher on the table and let your child press down with a flat palm instead of squeezing.
  • Punch the dots for your child, or use torn paper scraps, so they can focus on the tongs.
  • Let your child grab little clumps of dots from a pile instead of one dot at a time.

Make it harder

  • Use tweezers to drop one dot at a time, or make a color pattern in each cupcake.
  • Draw a line near the paper edge and punch the holes right along it.
  • Ask for a set number of sprinkles in each cupcake, like five red and three blue.

What to watch for

  • Notice how your child squeezes the hole puncher: with one hand, with two hands, or by pressing it against the table.
  • Watch how your child opens and closes the tongs. Small, controlled squeezes pick up dots better than big snaps.
  • If glue on the fingers bothers your child, keep a damp cloth nearby and let them press the dots down with the tongs.

Where this helps in daily life

Squeezing a hole puncher and working tongs build the hand strength and control kids use to squeeze a glue bottle, use a stapler, and serve salad with tongs.
