The Blooming Paper Water Lily

Purpose

This activity uses the magic of water to teach kids about science while strengthening their hands. Cutting out the flower shape helps them practice their scissor control and focus. Folding the small petals requires precision and builds the tiny muscles in their fingers. When placing the flower, they must be very gentle to keep it from sinking. This teaches them how to grade their touch and movement. It is a beautiful way to keep them engaged while they learn new skills.

Activity Steps

Steps:

  • Fill your aluminium foil pan with one inch of water.
  • Draw a flower with several pointed petals on the construction paper.
  • Use your scissors to cut out the flower shape.
  • Fold each petal toward the center until the flower is closed.
  • Use a marker to draw a small heart in the center.
  • Place the folded flower gently onto the surface of the water.
  • Watch as the petals slowly open to reveal the secret heart!

Safety Tip:
Always supervise your child during water play to ensure they stay safe and the floor stays dry.
