Baking Cup Tightrope Balance
- Play time:
- 5 to 10 minutes
- Setup:
- 5 minutes
- Where:
- Floor

Why it helps
This activity helps your child work on steady hands and slow movements. Balancing a lightweight baking cup on a thin piece of yarn requires a lot of focus. It is a great way to practice how much force to use without being too heavy-handed. This builds the control needed for delicate tasks like drawing and writing.
Steps
- Place two large, heavy boxes about two feet apart on the floor.
- Use masking tape to secure a long piece of yarn between the two boxes.
- Make sure the yarn is very taut and about six inches off the ground.
- Give your child a stack of colorful paper baking cups.
- Show them how to turn a cup upside down and rest the center on the yarn.
- Challenge them to place five cups in a row without any of them tipping over!
Safety tip: Always supervise your child to ensure the yarn is used safely and boxes are stable.
Make it easier
- Use a thick rope or a jump rope, which gives the cups a wider spot to rest.
- Start with two cups spaced far apart.
Make it harder
- Place all five cups, then take them off one at a time without tipping the rest.
- Place the cups with the non-dominant hand.
- Fit as many cups as possible on the line, close together but not touching.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child slows down near the yarn and lets go gently.
- Watch whether your child kneels or leans in to get close and steady, or reaches from far away.
- If kneeling on the floor is uncomfortable, set the boxes on a table so your child can sit.
Where this helps in daily life
Letting go slowly and gently is the same control kids use to hang a towel on a hook, lay a sticker flat on a page, and set a cup down without a clatter.
