Baking Cup Coin Balance

Why it helps

This activity helps children develop precision and steady hands. By floating paper cups, they practice careful movement. Placing coins one by one requires great control. It is a wonderful way to build focus!

Steps

  • Fill the Aluminum Foil Pan halfway with clear water.
  • Place one Baking Cup carefully onto the water surface.
  • Use a pincer grasp to pick up one coin.
  • Gently drop the coin into the center of the cup.
  • Continue adding coins to see how many it carries.
  • Try to keep the cup from tipping or sinking.

Safety tip: Constant adult supervision is required. Coins are small objects and pose a significant choking hazard. Ensure all materials are used only as intended and collected after play.

Make it easier

  • Use foil baking cups, which float longer than paper ones.
  • Start with big coins, like quarters, which are easier to pick up.
  • Float two cups side by side so there is more room to place coins.

Make it harder

  • Use small coins, like dimes, which take a finer pinch to pick up.
  • Guess how many coins the cup will hold before starting, then count to check.
  • Hold several coins in one hand and move them to the fingertips one at a time.

What to watch for

  • Notice where your child places each coin. Many kids find out that coins near the edge tip the cup, which is a useful discovery.
  • Watch the pinch. Picking a flat coin up off the table with the fingertips takes careful finger control.
  • If wet hands bother your child, keep a towel nearby and use tweezers to fish out any coins that fall in the water.

Where this helps in daily life

Picking up flat coins and setting them down gently builds the control kids need to put money in a piggy bank, set down a full cup without spilling, and stack blocks.
