The Foil Mountain Climb
- Play time:
- 10 to 15 minutes
- Setup:
- 5 minutes
- Where:
- Floor

Why it helps
This activity is a fun way to help your child use both hands together. Tearing the foil and wrapping it over the blocks builds strength in their fingers. It also provides great tactile input as they feel the crinkly foil surface. Walking the stuffed animal up the mountain helps them coordinate their arm movements. Pressing to make footprints is a wonderful way to practice using the right amount of pressure.
Steps
- Stack several blocks to make a mountain on the floor.
- Tear a long sheet of aluminum foil using both hands together.
- Wrap the foil over the blocks and press it down firmly.
- This creates a shiny, crinkly mountain surface for the toy.
- Ask your child to help their stuffed animal climb the mountain.
- Have them press the animals feet into the foil to leave footprints!
Safety tip: Always supervise your child during play. Aluminum foil can have thin edges and small pieces can be a choking hazard.
Make it easier
- Tear the foil for your child and let them do the wrapping and pressing.
- Build a low, wide mountain from two or three big blocks so it stays steady.
- Show one footprint first, then let your child make the rest their own way.
Make it harder
- Build a taller mountain with a winding path for the animal to follow.
- Ask for light footprints and deep footprints, then compare how they look.
- Guide two animals up the mountain at the same time, one in each hand.
What to watch for
- Notice whether the helper hand holds the blocks steady while the other hand presses the foil.
- Watch how much pressure your child uses. Very soft or very hard pressing gives you clues about what to practice next.
- If the crinkly sound or feel bothers your child, offer a spoon or paintbrush to press the foil instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Holding something steady with one hand while the other hand presses or wraps is the same teamwork kids use to color without the paper sliding, open snack bags, and wrap a gift.
