Why it helps
This activity is like making a homemade spinning toy. It helps your child work on using both hands together. It also builds strength in their fingers and wrists. Kids love seeing the bright colors spin and blend together. It is a great way to practice steady movements!
Steps
- Trace a medium circle on a piece of cardboard using a bowl.
- Cut the circle out using your scissors.
- Use your markers to draw colorful patterns on both sides of the circle.
- Use a pencil to poke two small holes near the center of the circle.
- Thread a long piece of yarn through both holes and tie the ends.
- Center the circle on the yarn and hold a loop in each hand.
- Swing the circle in a jump-rope motion to twist the yarn.
- Pull your hands apart quickly to make the circle spin and hum!
Safety tip: Adult supervision is required when using a pencil to poke holes.
Make it easier
- Wind up the spinner for your child, then let them do the pulling and relaxing.
- Say pull and relax out loud together to help with the rhythm.
- Hold a loop in each fist instead of hooking it on the fingers.
Make it harder
- Count how many pulls in a row your child can do before the spinner stops.
- Make a second spinner in a different size and compare how each one hums.
- Keep it spinning while standing on one foot.
What to watch for
- Notice whether both hands pull out and come back in at the same time and with the same strength.
- Watch the timing. Pulling too early or too hard stops the spin, while a smooth rhythm keeps it going.
- If the buzzing sound bothers your child, pull more gently for a quieter spin, or let them watch you spin it from across the room.
Where this helps in daily life
Pulling with both hands at the same time and strength is the same coordination kids use to pull up pants, open a bag of chips, and turn a jump rope.
