Why it helps
This activity is a fun way for your toddler to discover their body. By tapping a balloon with their hands, knees, or head, they learn body awareness. It helps them track objects with their eyes too. This active game builds focus and coordination through play. Your child will love the challenge of keeping the balloon in the air!
Steps
- Blow up a balloon and tie it securely.
- Tap the balloon into the air to show your child how it floats.
- Call out a body part like Hand and help them tap it.
- Try a harder part like Knee or Head to keep the balloon up.
- See how many times they can tap it before it hits the floor.
Safety tip: Adult supervision is always required when playing with balloons. Balloons and broken pieces are a serious choking hazard. Dispose of any popped pieces immediately to keep your child safe.
Make it easier
- Tie the balloon to a short string and hold the end so the balloon stays within reach.
- Start with hands only and add other body parts once your child is tapping with ease.
- Sit on the floor together and tap the balloon back and forth between you.
Make it harder
- Call out two body parts in a row, like hand then knee, before the balloon lands.
- Try trickier spots, like an elbow, a shoulder, or the back of the hand.
- Add a second balloon so your child has to watch and tap two at once.
What to watch for
- Notice how your child watches the balloon. Following it with the eyes and moving under it before it falls takes timing.
- Watch which body parts your child finds easily and which ones they look at first. That shows you which parts feel familiar.
- If the squeak or a possible pop worries your child, toss and tap a lightweight scarf or a beach ball instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Knowing where body parts are without looking helps kids push arms into sleeves, step into pants, and wash their own knees and feet at bath time.
