Sponge Boat Spray Race
Purpose
This playful activity is a fantastic way to build hand strength in preschoolers. By squeezing the spray bottle trigger, your child exercises the tiny muscles in their hand and fingers. These same muscles are essential for writing, drawing, and using scissors later on. Building the boat also works on bilateral coordination as both hands work together to assemble the sail. Plus, watching the boat slide across the water supports visual tracking and focus. It is an easy, wet-and-wild game that makes physical therapy feel like an adventure!
Activity Steps
Steps:
- Use scissors to cut a small triangle from the construction paper to act as your sail.
- Decorate the paper sail with colorful markers or crayons.
- Poke a toothpick through the top and bottom of the paper triangle to mount the sail.
- Gently push the bottom of the toothpick into the top of the sponge.
- Fill your aluminum foil pan halfway with water.
- Place your new sponge boat into the water at one end of the pan.
- Squeeze the trigger style spray bottle to shoot water at the sail, racing the boat to the other side!
Safety Tip:
Always supervise your child when playing with toothpicks and water. Ensure the play area is kept dry to prevent accidental slips.
