Why it helps
This activity helps your child practice the tricky steps of buttoning. It focuses on the finger movements needed to tilt a button and push it through a small hole. These fine motor skills are essential for getting dressed independently. By using a sturdy box, the buttons stay still while your child works. This makes it much easier to learn than practicing on a floppy shirt.
Steps
- Before you play, glue four large buttons in a row on the side of a shoe box.
- Wait for the glue to dry completely so the buttons do not pull off.
- Before play, cut four small squares of felt and snip a small slit in the center of each one.
- Ask your child to hide stickers inside the box.
- Your child picks a felt door and lines up the slit over a button.
- Your child pushes the button through the slit to close the door.
- They can then unbutton all the doors to find the hidden stickers.
Safety tip: Buttons can be a choking risk. Supervise your child closely and keep any loose buttons away from their mouth.
Make it easier
- Use very large buttons and make the felt slits extra long.
- Use stiff felt that is easier to hold.
Make it harder
- Use smaller buttons and make the slits tighter.
- Use thin fabric instead of felt to make it more floppy and challenging.
What to watch for
- Notice if your child uses two hands together or tries to use just one.
- See if they prefer to push the button or pull the fabric.
- Observe if they get frustrated and offer to hold the box steady.
Where this helps in daily life
This practice helps your child master buttoning their own sweaters, coats, and pants. It also builds the finger strength needed for opening snack bags and using tools.
