Heavy Ruler Cargo Lift

Why it helps

Proprioception is the sense that tells us where our body parts are and how much force we are using. This activity provides heavy input to the muscles and joints of the hands and arms. Lifting a weighted bean bag at the end of a ruler acts like a lever. It makes the body work harder to stay steady. This type of heavy work can be very calming and grounding for children in a busy classroom. It helps them organize their sensory system so they can focus on school tasks. Your child will also practice controlling their movements with great care.

Steps

  • Tie a piece of string to the end of a ruler.
  • Set three index cards on a desk to act as cargo docks.
  • Use a clothespin to clip a bean bag onto the hanging string.
  • Hold the ruler with both hands at the opposite end.
  • Lift the ruler so the bean bag hangs still in the air.
  • Move the ruler slowly to tap the bean bag onto each dock.
  • Try to tap the cards without sliding them across the desk.

Safety tip: Make sure the bean bag is securely clipped so it does not fall on toes. Supervise the use of the string to ensure it stays on the desk.

Make it easier

  • Hold the ruler closer to the bean bag.
  • Use a lighter object like a single clothespin instead of a bean bag.
  • Let the bean bag rest on the table while moving it.

Make it harder

  • Hold the ruler with only one hand.
  • Use a longer string to make the bean bag swing more.
  • Clip a second bean bag for more weight.

What to watch for

  • Notice if your child holds their breath while trying to stay steady.
  • Watch if they prefer to use their dominant hand or both hands together.
  • See if they choose to stand up or stay seated to get more power.

Where this helps in daily life

This heavy work helps your child build the muscle control needed for clear handwriting. It also prepares their body to sit still and focus during circle time or at a desk.
