Feather Wind-Trace
- Play time:
- 10 to 15 minutes
- Setup:
- 5 minutes
- Where:
- Floor

Why it helps
This activity helps children practice moving their hands and eyes together. Using a feather to move a pom-pom requires very gentle control. It teaches them how to grade their force. This means using the right amount of pressure. Following the curvy lines also helps them practice crossing the midline. This is an important skill for reading and writing later on.
Steps
- Tape a long piece of butcher paper to the floor using masking tape.
- Use a marker to draw a wide, winding path from one end to the other.
- Place a soft pom-pom at the start of your windy path.
- Give your child a feather and show them how to use it as a broom.
- Challenge them to sweep the pom-pom all the way to the finish line.
- Make sure they keep the pom-pom inside the lines as they move.
Safety tip: Adult supervision is recommended. Ensure the child stays in a stable kneeling or sitting position to prevent slipping on the paper.
Make it easier
- Draw the path extra wide and mostly straight, with just one or two gentle curves.
- Use a big pom-pom, which is easier to see and push.
- Swap the feather for a small paintbrush or a folded strip of paper, which pushes more firmly.
Make it harder
- Narrow the path, add sharp turns, or draw obstacles to sweep around.
- Blow the pom-pom along the path through a straw instead of sweeping it.
- Sweep with the non-dominant hand, or move two pom-poms along at once.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child uses light flicks or presses the feather flat and pushes.
- Watch whether your child reaches across their body on the curves or scoots their whole body over.
- If kneeling on the floor gets uncomfortable, tape the paper to a low table and let your child sit.
Where this helps in daily life
Using a light, controlled touch with a tool is the same skill kids need to erase pencil marks without tearing the paper, paint with a brush, and brush crumbs into their hand.
