Why it helps
This activity turns a simple basket into a fun rescue mission! It helps your child practice using scissors on a surface that provides real resistance. Cutting tape requires more hand strength than cutting paper. This helps build the muscles needed for writing. Plus, it teaches them to plan their moves to avoid the sticky parts!
Steps
- Place a small stuffed animal inside a plastic basket.
- Stretch several long strips of masking tape across the top of the basket in a web pattern.
- Make sure the tape is pulled tight so it stays in place during the rescue.
- Hand your child the safety scissors and show them where to start cutting the web.
- Challenge them to cut through every tape strip until the opening is clear for the toy.
Safety tip: Always supervise your child while they are using scissors to ensure they stay safe. Ensure the basket is stable to prevent slipping.
Make it easier
- Use only three or four strips so the rescue happens quickly.
- Hold the basket steady for your child so they can put all their focus on the scissors.
- Tape strips of paper across the basket instead of tape, since paper is easier to cut and not sticky.
Make it harder
- Draw a dot on each strip with a marker and ask your child to cut exactly on the dot.
- Layer the strips two or three deep so each cut takes more squeezing.
- Hide several small toys and call out which one to rescue first, so your child plans which strips to cut.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child keeps the scissors upright with the thumb on top, or turns the hand sideways.
- If tape gums up the blades, notice whether your child slows down, wipes the blades, or asks for help.
- If the sticky tape bothers your child's fingers, make the web from strips of paper or yarn instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Snipping through tougher material builds the hand strength kids need to cut felt and cardboard in class, snip open snack bags, and trim tape when wrapping a gift.
