Why it helps
Pushing pipe cleaner shapes through tight slits in foam gives the hands steady resistance, which builds strength and helps children feel how much force to use. Bending the pipe cleaners into shapes asks both hands to work together. Holding the box steady with one hand while the other hand pushes builds the shoulder and arm stability that supports handwriting and opening stiff containers.
Steps
- Before play, use a marker to draw 6 to 8 short lines on a foam sheet, each about as long as your thumb.
- Fold the foam across the middle of each line, then snip along the line from the fold to make a slit. Unfold it flat.
- Tape the foam sheet over the open top of a shoe box so the slits sit over the opening.
- Invite your child to bend and twist pipe cleaners into small shapes, like coils, squares, or hooks. Fold over the sharp tips.
- Ask your child to hold the box steady with the helper hand.
- Show your child how to push a shape through a slit until it drops into the box.
- Keep posting until all the shapes are in the box. Peel back one corner of the foam, tip the shapes out, and play again.
Safety tip: Fold over the sharp wire tips of the pipe cleaners so they do not scratch. Keep the scissors with you, since they are only for cutting the slits.
Make it easier
- Bend the pipe cleaners into simple U shapes or short folded sticks, which push through slits easily.
- Cut the slits a little longer so each shape slides in with a lighter push.
- Make the shapes together. You start each bend and your child finishes it.
Make it harder
- Make a tight coil, a square, and a hook, then post them in that order.
- Copy a shape you made first, matching its size and number of bends.
- Push each shape through using only the thumb and pointer finger.
What to watch for
- Notice how both hands share the bending. Often one hand holds the pipe cleaner still while the other hand bends it.
- Watch whether your child turns each shape to line it up with the slit before pushing.
- If the fuzzy pipe cleaners feel scratchy even with the tips folded, fold strips of paper into shapes and post those instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Bending wire into a shape and lining it up with a slot uses the same two-handed planning kids need to twist a twist tie, put a key on a ring, and fold a paper to fit an envelope.
