Why it helps
This activity gives your child powerful input (heavy work and pressure) which helps calm and organize their body, improving focus and body awareness. It also requires careful planning and coordination to use both sides of the body together while balancing.
Steps
- Lay five to eight pillows or couch cushions in a path across a rug or carpet, close enough that your child can step from one to the next. The rug keeps them from sliding.
- Put a pile of blocks at one end of the path as the warehouse, and pick a drop-off spot at the other end, like a chair or a corner of the rug.
- Ask your child to load a few blocks into the basket, then carry it with both hands across the pillows, trying not to step on the floor.
- At the drop-off spot, your child unloads the blocks one at a time, then walks back along the path for the next load.
- Let your child choose how many blocks to carry each trip. A fuller basket is heavier and gives arms and legs more work.
- Start with the pillows close together, and spread them out a little once your child feels steady.
- When the warehouse is empty, your child can build a tower or a house with the delivered blocks.
Safety tip: Set the path on a rug away from furniture corners, and have your child step, not jump, while carrying the basket. Keep loads light enough that your child can see their feet.
