Butcher Paper Body Map

Butcher Paper Body Map

Steps:

  • Lay a long piece of butcher paper on the floor.
  • Use masking tape to secure the corners so it stays still.
  • Ask your child to lie down flat on their back on the paper.
  • Slowly trace around their whole body using a bright marker.
  • Have your child stand up and look at their twin on the paper.
  • Give them a sheet of stickers and ask them to place a sticker on their knees.
  • Challenge them to place stickers on their elbows, toes, and belly button too!

Safety Tip:
Always supervise your child during play. Stickers can be a choking hazard, so make sure they stay on the paper and not in the mouth.

The Vertical Sponge Trail

The Vertical Sponge Trail

Steps:

  • Secure a long piece of butcher paper vertically to a wall at your child’s shoulder height using masking tape.
  • Use a marker to draw a simple, winding path across the paper.
  • Place a bowl of water on a nearby table or the floor.
  • Ask your child to soak the sponge and squeeze it until it is damp.
  • Challenge them to trace the path by squeezing the sponge along the marker line to leave a wet trail.
  • Encourage them to keep their arm high as they follow the winding road.

Safety Tip:
Adult supervision is recommended. Ensure that the floor beneath the paper is kept dry to prevent slips or falls.

The Feather Wind-Trace

The Feather Wind-Trace

Steps:

  • Tape a long piece of butcher paper to the floor using masking tape.
  • Use a marker to draw a wide, winding path from one end to the other.
  • Place a soft pom-pom at the start of your windy path.
  • Give your child a feather and show them how to use it as a broom.
  • Challenge them to sweep the pom-pom all the way to the finish line.
  • Make sure they keep the pom-pom inside the lines as they move.

Safety Tip:
Adult supervision is recommended. Ensure the child stays in a stable kneeling or sitting position to prevent slipping on the paper.

Giant Sponge Squish Art

Giant Sponge Squish Art

Steps:

  • Tape a large sheet of Butcher Paper securely to the floor. Set up a paint station (a shallow bowl with Tempera Paint) just to one side of the paper.
  • Encourage your child to kneel or squat beside the paper, not directly over it. This position naturally encourages core engagement and balance.
  • Have your child dip a sponge into the paint. The challenge is to use two hands to press the sponge down firmly onto the paper, making a ‘squish’ sound and mark. Make sure they reach far across their body to stamp marks on the opposite side of the paper (crossing midline).
  • Vary the required force: Ask them to make ‘strong’ marks (heavy work input) and then ‘light’ marks to practice motor control.

Safety Tip:
Ensure the floor area is dry before beginning and supervise closely to prevent slips, especially when working with wet paint or sponges.

Tracing Stencils

Stencil Trace

For this activity, you can use many different types of stencils to trace.

Provide the child with different stencils and have him/her trace inside or outside the stencil.

The child can also finger-paint inside these stencils.

Helpful Tip:

If the child has difficulties with bilateral hand use, you may want to tape the stencil to the surface the child works on.
