Why it helps
This activity is a wonderful way for your child to learn about their own body and where their different parts are located. By tracing their outline and then choosing where to place stickers, they are building body awareness, which helps with coordination and spatial skills. It is also a great bonding moment that encourages creativity and self-identity!
Steps
- Lay a long piece of butcher paper on the floor.
- Use masking tape to secure the corners so it stays still.
- Ask your child to lie down flat on their back on the paper.
- Slowly trace around their whole body using a bright marker.
- Have your child stand up and look at their twin on the paper.
- Give them a sheet of stickers and ask them to place a sticker on their knees.
- Challenge them to place stickers on their elbows, toes, and belly button too!
Safety tip: Always supervise your child during play. Stickers can be a choking hazard, so make sure they stay on the paper and not in the mouth.
Make it easier
- Choose large stickers and lift one corner of each so little fingers can grab it.
- Start with two or three body parts, like hands, feet, and tummy.
Make it harder
- Add stickers to trickier parts like shoulders, wrists, ankles, and hips.
- Play a copy game where your child touches their own knee, then puts a sticker on the paper knee.
- Let your child draw a face, hair, and clothes on the outline.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child touches the body part on themselves before finding it on the outline.
- Watch how your child peels stickers, with a fingertip pinch, a fingernail under the edge, or by asking for help.
- If lying still while being traced feels uncomfortable, trace just the hands and feet, or trace a favorite stuffed animal instead.
Where this helps in daily life
Knowing where elbows, knees, and feet are without looking helps kids push arms into sleeves, step into pants, and wash their own body at bath time.
