The Sticky Landing Fan
- Play time:
- 5 to 10 minutes
- Setup:
- 2 minutes
- Where:
- Floor

Why it helps
This activity is a great way for your toddler to practice moving their whole body. By waving the plate, they build strength in their arms and chest. They also learn how much force is needed to move a light feather. Landing the feather on the tape helps with focus and coordination. It is a fun way to explore wind and touch!
Steps
- Place three long strips of masking tape on the floor, sticky side up.
- Set a colorful feather on the floor about two feet away from the tape.
- Give your child a paper plate to hold with both hands.
- Show them how to wave the plate up and down to create wind.
- Help them fan the feather toward the sticky tape landing pad.
- Watch as the feather flies through the air and sticks to the tape!
- Ask your child to use their fingers to peel the feather off and start again.
Safety tip: Choking Hazard. Always supervise your child to ensure they do not put feathers or masking tape in their mouth.
Make it easier
- Tape the strips down at both ends so they lie flat, and make the landing pad wide.
- Start with the feather just a few inches from the tape.
- Use a sturdy plate or a piece of cardboard, which pushes more air with each wave.
Make it harder
- Make a path with two lines of tape and fan the feather through it to the landing pad.
- Hold the plate in one hand only, then switch hands.
- Swap the feather for a crumpled sheet of paper, which takes a stronger, steadier fan to move.
What to watch for
- Notice how your child changes the fanning when the feather goes too far or not far enough. Big and small waves are a way of learning about force.
- Watch whether your child holds the plate at the sides with both hands and moves both arms together.
- If the feather tickles or the sticky tape feels unpleasant, let your child lift the feather off with a clothespin.
Where this helps in daily life
Learning how hard or soft to move the arms helps kids judge the force to use when they wipe a table, wave to a friend, or toss a ball gently.
