Colorful Sponge Squish

Why it helps

This activity helps your child build the small muscles in their hands and fingers. When they squeeze the sponge through the plastic bag, they are working on finger strength and control. This is the same strength they will eventually use to hold a crayon or use a spoon. Watching the water and color move also helps them focus their eyes and stay calm. It is a mess-free way to explore how things feel and change shape.

Steps

  • Before play, use a knife to cut a large kitchen sponge into three or four wide strips.
  • Place the sponge strips inside a large ziplock bag and add a little water.
  • Add two drops of food coloring and seal the bag tightly to keep the water inside.
  • Place the bag flat on a tray to keep your table dry.
  • Show your child how to press down on the sponges with their whole hand.
  • Invite them to use their fingers to squeeze the sponges one by one.
  • Encourage them to push the colored water around the bag to see the colors mix.

Safety tip: Always supervise your child during this activity to make sure they do not try to chew on the plastic bag. An adult should handle the knife and cut the sponges into large pieces before the child plays.

Make it easier

  • Use a thinner sponge that is easier to squeeze
  • Add more water so the liquid moves with less pressure

Make it harder

  • Ask your child to use only one finger at a time to press the sponge
  • Try to push the sponges into the corners of the bag

What to watch for

  • Notice if your child prefers to use their palm or their fingertips to press
  • See if they enjoy the sound the water makes inside the bag
  • Offer to hold the bag still if they seem frustrated when it slides

Where this helps in daily life

Developing finger strength and coordination helps toddlers learn to squeeze a tube of toothpaste or grip a heavy cup.
