- Setup:
- 5 minutes
- Where:
- Table

Why it helps
This activity helps your child work on steadying their hands while moving. Using a spoon to scoop a marble and place it into a floating carton requires great control. It builds the muscles in the fingers and wrists. This control is important for eating with utensils later. It also helps with focus and matching.
Steps
- Fill a large bowl halfway with water.
- Place an empty egg carton inside the bowl so it floats.
- Put a small pile of marbles on the table next to the bowl.
- Have your child scoop a single marble using a spoon.
- They must carry it and drop it into a specific egg cup.
- Challenge them to fill all the cups without sinking the boat.
- Try using the other hand to make it harder.
Safety tip: Adult supervision is required. Marbles are a major choking hazard. Keep these materials away from children under 3 years old.
Make it easier
- Cut the carton down to four or six cups so it fits your bowl and floats steadily.
- Use a large serving spoon so the marble sits deep and is less likely to roll off.
- Put the marbles in a shallow dish right next to the bowl so each carry is short.
Make it harder
- Use a small teaspoon so the marble has less room and the carry takes a steadier wrist.
- Call out which cup to fill next, like the four corners first, so your child plans where the weight goes.
- Move the marble pile across the table so each scoop has a longer trip to the boat.
What to watch for
- Notice how your child holds the spoon, with the whole fist or with the fingers, and whether the wrist stays level during the carry.
- Watch where the marbles land. Filling one side first tips the carton, which opens a chance to talk about balance.
- If the spoon feels frustrating, let your child carry a few marbles by hand, then offer the spoon again.
Where this helps in daily life
Keeping a spoon level while carrying it across the table uses the same steady wrist kids need to serve themselves at dinner, carry a cup of water without spilling, and measure ingredients when baking.
