Why it helps
This activity is a fun way for your child to strengthen their hands. By pushing the fuzzy pipe cleaners into the carton, they use their finger muscles. Threading small beads onto the seaweed requires a steady hand and lots of focus. It also teaches them to use their helper hand to hold the carton still. This helps with tasks like writing or using a fork later on. Plus, creating a colorful reef is a great way to spark their imagination!
Steps
- Before play, turn the egg carton upside down. Poke a small hole in the top of each bump with a sharp pencil. This is an adult step.
- Let your child color each bump with markers, using any colors they like.
- Ask your child to push one end of a pipe cleaner down into a hole, so it stands up like seaweed.
- Ask your child to bend the pipe cleaner into a wavy seaweed shape.
- Ask your child to pick up a bead and slide it onto the seaweed. Add as many beads as your child likes.
- Repeat for every hole until the reef is full of color.
Safety tip: Only an adult uses the sharp pencil. Beads are a choking risk, so stay close and count them after play, and fold over any sharp pipe cleaner tips.
Make it easier
- Make the holes a little bigger so the pipe cleaners slide in with less push.
- Thread the beads on before bending the pipe cleaner, while it is still straight.
- Use pony beads with big holes, and fold over the bottom tip so beads cannot slide off.
Make it harder
- Make each strand of seaweed follow a pattern, like two blue beads and then one green.
- Use smaller beads that take a more precise pinch.
- Twist two pipe cleaners together into one thicker strand before adding beads.
What to watch for
- Notice whether your child brings the bead to the pipe cleaner or pushes the pipe cleaner through the bead, and which hand holds still.
- Watch how much push it takes to get the pipe cleaners into the carton, and whether your child uses fingertips or the whole hand.
- If the fuzzy texture bothers your child, wrap a small piece of tape around the bottom of the pipe cleaner as a smooth handle.
Where this helps in daily life
Pushing a stiff stem through a small opening and threading beads take the same fingertip control kids use to string a bracelet, poke a straw into a drink pouch, and start a zipper.
