Sponge Stick Rotation

Sponge Stick Rotation

Steps:

  • Fill the bowl with water. Soak the sponge completely. Ask your child to wring the sponge out tightly, making it damp and dense.
  • Place the damp, dense sponge firmly inside the plastic container to keep it stable on the table.
  • Hold the container steady with your helper hand. Pick up one craft stick using a comfortable grasp with your working hand.
  • Aim the flat end of the stick at the sponge. Use a strong, twisting motion to screw the stick halfway into the resistant sponge.
  • Continue twisting all the craft sticks into the sponge until the surface looks like a prickly cushion.
  • Challenge your child to reverse the movement: use a strong twist and pull to remove the sticks one by one. Try switching hands for stabilization.

Safety Tip:
Constant adult supervision is required. Ensure the child remains seated while working and only uses the craft sticks for the intended twisting action.

Twist Cap Treasure Drop

Twist Cap Treasure Drop

Steps:

  • Place the buttons in a plastic container next to the empty bottles.
  • Challenge your child to hold one bottle tightly with their helper hand to stabilize it on the table.
  • Use the working hand to twist the cap off the bottle completely. Encourage smooth forearm rotation (twisting).
  • Pick up one button using only the thumb and pointer finger (pincer grasp).
  • Carefully drop the button into the narrow opening of the bottle. This requires strong aim and distal finger control.
  • Once the button is inside, pick up the cap and twist it firmly back onto the bottle using the opposite rotation. Make sure it is tight!
  • Repeat this entire sequence of twist-off, drop-in, and twist-on until all the buttons are delivered into the bottle.

Safety Tip:
Buttons are small, hard objects. Constant and direct adult supervision is required throughout this activity, as they pose a choking hazard for children under five.

Plate Spin Targets

Plate Spin Targets

Steps:

  • Use markers to draw 4-6 small, bright dots (targets) randomly across the surface of the paper plate.
  • Flip the plate over. Use masking tape to secure a craft stick firmly to the center back as a spin handle.
  • Have your child place the plate on the table. They use one hand to grasp the craft stick handle.
  • Challenge your child to spin the plate quickly using their hand (practicing forearm rotation).
  • While the plate is spinning, they must try to quickly tap the center of a colored dot using the pointer finger of their other hand.
  • Try switching hands! Use the non-dominant hand to spin and the dominant hand to tap the moving targets.

Safety Tip:
Ensure the plate and handle are securely fastened. Supervise closely to ensure the child keeps their fingers clear of the spinning parts to avoid minor scrapes.

Cap Twister Rings

Cap Twister Rings

Steps:

  • Prep: An adult should cut the pipe cleaners into small 4-inch strips. Place the container and the strips on the table.
  • Show the child how to firmly hold the body of the plastic container steady with one hand (the helper hand) to ensure it doesn’t move.
  • Demonstrate how to take a pipe cleaner strip and use the fingertips of the other hand to tightly twist and wrap it around the ridges of the container cap, creating a tight ring.
  • Challenge the child to continue wrapping the pipe cleaner strips until the entire cap is covered in colorful, tight rings.
  • For extra practice, encourage the child to use the opposite rotation (untwisting and unwinding) to remove all the pipe cleaner rings before starting the challenge again.

Safety Tip:
Adult supervision is required. Since this activity involves pipe cleaners cut into small pieces, they can pose a potential choking hazard and should be immediately collected and stored safely after the activity.

Foil Drip Maze

Foil Drip Maze

Steps:

  • Prepare the maze surface: Cover a flat piece of cardboard entirely with aluminum foil, crimping the edges up slightly to create a sturdy, shallow tray (this is your waterproof maze board).
  • Use markers to draw a simple maze or a winding path on the foil surface. Draw a start circle and a finish circle for the water drop to travel between.
  • Mix a small amount of water with food coloring in a container. Demonstrate how to load the eyedropper by squeezing the bulb using a neat pincer grasp (thumb and index finger) and drawing up the colored water.
  • Challenge your child to hold the eyedropper over the start circle and release a single drop. Then, they must carefully angle the tray (bilateral hands) and/or use the eyedropper to push the drop along the marker-drawn path to the finish line, practicing fine control and precision.

Safety Tip:
Ensure close supervision as small objects (like eyedropper parts) and colored water are used. Always supervise to prevent ingestion of materials.
