The Coffee Filter Raindrop Race

Steps:

  • Place six baking cups in a circle on a large paper plate.
  • Fill a small bowl with water and add two drops of food coloring.
  • Lay one coffee filter flat across the top of all the baking cups.
  • Ask your child to hold the eyedropper with their thumb and pointer finger.
  • Squeeze the dropper to pick up some of the colored raindrops.
  • Carefully drop water onto the filter right over each cup target.
  • Watch the water soak through and try to fill each cup equally!

Safety Tip:
Food coloring and small cups can be messy. Always watch your child closely to make sure they do not drink the water.

Steps:

  • Set out a few white coffee filters on a tray or plastic container.
  • Show your child how to fold the coffee filter in half, then in half again.
  • Mix a few drops of food coloring into small cups of water.
  • Have your child squeeze the eyedropper to soak up the colorful water.
  • Encourage them to carefully drop the water onto the folded edges of the filter.
  • Slowly unfold the wet filter to see a beautiful, colorful pattern.
  • Let the filters dry to create magic flowers or window art!

Safety Tip:
Food coloring can stain clothes and surfaces. Use a tray to keep the water contained. Always supervise your child when using the eyedropper and water.

Squeeze and Paint

Fill up the spray bottle with water and food coloring.

Have the child grasp the neck of the spray bottle using his/her little finger, ring finger, and thumb.

Have the child put his/her index finger and middle finger on the trigger.

Ask the child to squeeze the trigger and spray the coffee filter/butcher paper to create a colorful picture.
