Putty Cord Threading Art

Putty Cord Threading Art

Steps:

  • Use markers to draw several small target dots randomly across the cardboard surface. Keep the cardboard stable with your helper hand.
  • Squeeze the hole puncher forcefully onto each marker dot. Punch 6 to 8 holes across the cardboard to create your weaving board.
  • Take a large lump of Theraputty. Use strong effort to roll the putty tightly into long, stiff, spaghetti-like cords.
  • Pick up one stiff putty cord. Hold the cardboard firmly steady with your non-dominant hand.
  • Challenge your child to use the stiff cord like a needle. Push the cord straight through one of the narrow punched holes. Pull it all the way through.
  • Continue threading and pushing the putty cords through the holes to create a colorful, textured design.

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Theraputty/Playdough is a dense material and poses a choking hazard for children who still place items in their mouths. Ensure materials are used only as intended.

Putty Pancake Decorators

Putty Pancake Decorators

Steps:

  • Give your child a large chunk of Theraputty or stiff playdough. Encourage them to use both hands to squeeze, mash, and roll it into a thick ‘pancake’ on the paper plate. Press hard for heavy work!
  • Ask your child to hold the paper plate firmly steady with their helper hand to keep the ‘pancake’ from sliding.
  • Pick up the tweezers or tongs. Use a strong pincer grasp to grab one small bead at a time.
  • Carefully aim the bead. Push it firmly and precisely into the resistant putty surface to create a colorful design or pattern.
  • Repeat the process until the entire putty pancake is covered in decorative beads. Try using different colors or sizes of beads.

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Beads and Theraputty/Playdough are small objects. They pose a significant choking hazard for children who still place items in their mouths.

Twist and Drill Wall Work

Twist and Drill Wall Work

Steps:

  • First, use the masking tape to secure a piece of sturdy cardboard vertically onto a stable wall or door at your child’s chest height.
  • Press a large, thick lump of Theraputty or stiff playdough firmly onto the center of the vertical cardboard. This is your resistant drill target.
  • Hold the craft stick like a pencil. Encourage your child to use their helper hand to stabilize the cardboard next to the putty.
  • Aim the craft stick at the putty. Use strong finger pressure and a twisting motion to ‘drill’ the stick deep into the resistant putty.
  • Switch directions and twist the stick the opposite way to pull it out. Repeat this drill motion, filling the putty surface with holes.
  • Try putting all the sticks in, then pull them out. See how fast you can twist and drill all the sticks into the target!

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Theraputty (or playdough) and craft sticks are small objects and pose a significant choking hazard for children who still place items in their mouths. Ensure materials are used only as intended.

Putty Piston Push

Putty Piston Push

Steps:

  • Press a large lump of Theraputty (or stiff playdough) firmly into the bottom of the Plastic Container or lid to create a stable, resistant base.
  • Place the small Beads and Craft Sticks in separate piles next to the container. Ask your child to sit stably at the work area.
  • Challenge the child to use their non-dominant hand to firmly hold the container steady on the table.
  • Pick up one craft stick. Use a precise pincer grasp (thumb and pointer finger) to balance one small bead onto the end of the stick.
  • Aim the loaded stick at the putty. Use a strong, controlled push to drive the stick deep into the resistant base, ‘planting’ the bead.
  • Repeat this action until the entire putty base is filled with sticks. Encourage maximum pushing effort for heavy work input!

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Beads and Theraputty/Playdough are small objects and pose a choking hazard for children under five. Ensure materials are used only as intended and collected immediately after play.

Tight Stick Wedge Push

Tight Stick Wedge Push

Steps:

  • Fold an index card tightly in half lengthwise. This creates a stiff, narrow V-shaped wedge.
  • Press a small lump of Theraputty or stiff playdough firmly down inside the V-wedge. The putty should be resistant.
  • Place the loaded index card wedge flat inside the plastic container to keep it stable on the table.
  • Ask your child to hold the container firmly steady with their non-dominant hand (the helper hand).
  • Pick up one craft stick. Challenge your child to aim and push the stick straight down into the resistant putty through the narrow V-opening.
  • Encourage strong, controlled pushes until the putty wedge is completely filled with sticks. Pull the sticks out for a reverse challenge.

Safety Tip:
Theraputty, playdough, and craft sticks are small objects. Constant and direct adult supervision is required throughout this activity to prevent choking hazards for children in this age group.
