Wet Cardboard Q-Tip Punch

Steps:

  • Adult Prep: Mix a small amount of tempera paint with water in the bowl until the mixture is thick, but wet enough to saturate the cardboard slightly.
  • Use the spoon to paint a thick layer of the mixture onto a piece of sturdy cardboard. Let the paint soak in slightly to increase resistance, but keep the surface damp.
  • Use a marker to quickly draw small target dots randomly across the wet, painted surface.
  • Ask your child to hold the cardboard firmly steady with their non-dominant (helper) hand to stabilize the base.
  • Pick up a Q-Tip using a strong pincer grip (thumb and pointer finger).
  • Challenge your child to aim the Q-Tip at a marker dot. Use a strong, controlled push to punch the Q-Tip straight through the wet, resistant cardboard surface.
  • Repeat this firm punching action until all the target dots have been successfully punctured.

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Q-Tips are small materials and pose a significant choking hazard for children under five. Ensure the child only pushes the Q-Tip into the cardboard, keeping it away from the face, nose, and ears.

Pom-Pom Skewer Push

Pom-Pom Skewer Push

Steps:

  • Adult Prep: Secure a thick piece of cardboard firmly onto the inside of the plastic container lid using glue. This creates a stable, resistant base for planting.
  • Place the Q-Tips and pom-poms in separate containers. Ask your child to hold one pom-pom steady with their helper hand to stabilize it.
  • Challenge your child to pick up a Q-Tip using a neat pincer grasp (thumb and pointer finger).
  • Encourage them to push the Q-Tip straight through the middle of the resistant pom-pom. They need controlled force to do this without bending the Q-Tip.
  • Once the pom-pom is skewered, hold the container base steady with the helper hand.
  • Aim the Q-Tip stick and push it firmly into the resistant cardboard base to create a colorful, dense forest of pom-poms.

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Q-Tips and small pom-poms are choking hazards for children under five. Ensure materials are not placed in the mouth, nose, or ears.

Q-Tip Basket Weave

Q-Tip Basket Weave

Steps:

  • Use a marker to draw 10 to 12 dots evenly spaced around the top of the container lid. An adult should use the hole puncher to create a tight hole at each dot.
  • Place the container on a stable table. Hold the container firmly with your helper hand to keep it from moving.
  • Use your working hand to pick up a Q-Tip using a neat pincer grasp (thumb and pointer finger). Push the Q-Tip straight into a hole until it sticks out slightly on the inside.
  • Repeat this process until all holes are filled, creating a standing Q-Tip fence around the lid.
  • Give the child a long piece of yarn or string. Tie a knot on the starting Q-Tip.
  • Challenge them to weave the yarn over the first Q-Tip and under the next one. Continue weaving in this over-under pattern all the way around the fence. Pull the string tight to reinforce the basket structure.

Q-Tips and yarn are small objects that pose a choking hazard. Constant and direct adult supervision is required throughout this activity. Adults should handle the scissors and hole puncher during preparation.

Q-Tip Push & Pop

Prep the Carton: Flip an empty egg carton upside down. Using a pen or a pencil, poke a small hole in the top of each egg cup.

Demonstrate: Show your child how to take a Q-tip, line it up with one of the holes, and push it through until it drops in.

Let them Play: Give your child a handful of Q-tips and let them get to work!

The “Pop”: Once they’ve pushed them all in, lift the carton up to reveal all the Q-tips underneath, the “pop!”, and let them start all over again.

Safety Tip: Since this activity involves small items (Q-tips) and a young age group, constant adult supervision is required to prevent them from being put in the mouth or ears, which could pose a choking hazard or injury risk.

Egg Cup Dot Art

Egg Cup Dot Art

Steps:

  • Prepare the palette by cutting the lid off an egg carton. Place a small dab of glue or paint inside the bottom of each egg cup.
  • Give the child one piece of construction paper and several Q-tips. Encourage them to hold the Q-tip using their thumb and pointer finger (pincer grasp).
  • Challenge the child to dip the Q-tip into one cup to collect the paint or glue.
  • The goal is to carefully transfer the Q-tip to the construction paper to make precise dots or follow a pre-drawn line.
  • Encourage the child to switch colors and fill the entire paper with dots. They must stabilize the paper with their helper hand.

Safety Tip:
Due to the small size of the Q-tips and glue/paint, close adult supervision is required. Ensure the child understands the materials are not for eating or placing near the face.
