Roller Path Painting

Steps:

  • Use a marker to draw a simple, winding path, large circle, or thick zigzag line onto the surface of the paper plate.
  • Prepare the paint station: Pour a small amount of tempera paint into a shallow container. Use a paper roll (like a toilet paper roll) as your ‘paint roller.’
  • Show your child how to hold the paper roll vertically, using their fingertips like a handle. They should aim to keep their wrist slightly bent backward (extended).
  • Have your child dip just the end of the paper roll into the paint, then transfer it to the paper plate.
  • Challenge your child to roll the painted end of the tube precisely along the marked path. They must use wrist and forearm movements to steer the roller and stay on the line.
  • Try rolling back and forth along the same path until the line is completely covered in color.

Safety Tip:
Always supervise young children closely during painting activities. Ensure all paint used is non-toxic and washable. Monitor to ensure the paper roll pieces are not put in the mouth.

Resistant Tear Feed

Steps:

  • Prep the surface: Use masking tape to secure several large pieces of construction paper tightly onto a piece of cardboard.
  • Place the cardboard upright on a chair or stand it vertically against a wall. Put the container on the floor below the paper.
  • Show your toddler how to hold the cardboard firmly with their helper hand to keep it stable while working.
  • Encourage them to grab a corner of the paper and use a strong pull to rip the construction paper off the resistant cardboard base.
  • Once ripped free, challenge them to drop the torn pieces directly into the container on the floor. Repeat until the cardboard is clear!

Safety Tip:
Constant, close adult supervision is essential for this age group. Ensure the toddler does not put torn pieces of paper or masking tape in their mouth, as these pose a choking hazard.

Styro-Dart Challenge

Steps:

  • Help your child draw a bullseye target on the Styrofoam block using markers. Assign different point values to the rings (e.g., 50 points for the center, 10 points for the outer ring).
  • Transform the pipe cleaners into ‘darts.’ Have your child fold one end into a small, easy-to-grip loop (the handle). Tightly curl the opposite end into a sharp spiral or point that will stick into the Styrofoam.
  • Set up the target using the cardboard as a stand/easel. Have your child stand 3 to 5 feet away. Emphasize holding the dart so their wrist is slightly bent back (extended) for better control before aiming.
  • Challenge your child to toss the pipe cleaner darts at the target, trying to grade their force (proprioception) so the dart sticks in without bouncing off. Keep track of points for a fun competition!

Safety Tip:
Ensure the children stand far enough apart if multiple children are playing. Supervise to ensure the pipe cleaner ‘darts’ are only thrown at the designated Styrofoam target and not toward faces or other objects.

The Sticky Spiderweb Challenge

Steps:

  • Set up the spiderweb: Use masking tape to create a sticky ‘web’ across an open doorway or the entrance to a hallway. Make sure the sticky side faces outward into the room where the child will be throwing.”
  • “Place the basket of pom-poms about 3 to 5 feet away from the web (adjust distance based on your child’s skill). Encourage your child to throw the pom-poms and try to get them stuck on the web.”
  • “Once the pom-poms are stuck, transition the activity to retrieval. Have your child carefully use their fingers to peel the stuck items off the masking tape. They will likely need to use one hand to hold the tape still while the other hand pulls the pom-pom free!”
  • “Repeat the process until the basket is empty, then reload and start the challenge again!

Safety Tip:
Ensure the masking tape is placed at a safe height (not near face or neck level) and supervise closely, especially when children are standing or reaching near the doorframe.

Dinosaur Feet

The purpose of this activity is to promote visual motor skills and spatial awareness, as it pertains to directionality (i.e. above, below, to the right of, to the left of, etc.).

Preparation:

Step 1: Cut out colored paper into “dinosaur feet.”
Step 2: Arrange stickers on one dinosaur foot.
Step 3: Have your child imitate the exact pattern with stickers on the opposite foot.
