The Pencil Top Target Spin

The Pencil Top Target Spin

Steps:

  • Use a small bowl to trace a circle onto your cardboard.
  • Carefully use scissors to cut the circle out.
  • Let your child draw a bright spiral pattern on the circle using markers.
  • Push the pencil tip straight through the center of the cardboard circle.
  • Make sure the cardboard fits snugly near the bottom of the pencil.
  • Lay your butcher paper flat on the floor and secure it with masking tape.
  • Use your markers to draw three nesting target circles on the paper.
  • Hold the pencil top with your thumb and first two fingers.
  • Twist your fingers quickly to spin the top onto the target circles!

Safety Tip:
Ensure the pencil tip is not overly sharp to prevent accidental pokes during the spinning motion.

Sticky Finger Bead Rescue

Sticky Finger Bead Rescue

Steps:

  • Wrap a small piece of masking tape around your child’s index finger.
  • Make sure the sticky side faces out.
  • Place a small bowl of colorful beads on the table.
  • Ask your child to tap a bead with their sticky finger to pick it up.
  • They must use their thumb to peel the bead off.
  • Have them drop the bead into a paper cup.
  • Repeat until the cup is full of rescued beads!

Safety Tip:
Adult supervision is required. Beads are a choking hazard. Keep beads away from children who put items in their mouths.

Foil Cap Tweezer Feed

Foil Cap Tweezer Feed

Steps:

  • Tear the aluminum foil into small, manageable strips using both hands.
  • Use your fingertips to tightly crumple each strip into a dense ‘rock.’ Place these rocks in the container.
  • Hold the bottle firmly steady with your helper hand. Use your dominant hand to twist the cap off completely.
  • Pick up the tweezers. Use a precise pincer grasp to grab one tiny foil rock.
  • Carefully carry and drop the foil rock into the narrow bottle opening.
  • Twist the cap firmly back onto the bottle. Repeat the whole sequence until the bottle is full.

Safety Tip:
Constant and direct adult supervision is required. Ensure children compress the foil tightly to avoid sharp edges. Collect all small foil pieces and tweezers immediately after play, as they pose a potential choking hazard.

Ribbon Resistance Unwind

Ribbon Resistance Unwind

Steps:

  • Adult Prep: Cut several strips of ribbon (about 12 inches long). Secure one end of a ribbon strip firmly onto a craft stick using a small piece of masking tape.
  • Adult Prep: Tightly wrap the ribbon all the way down the stick until it is completely covered. Secure the loose end of the ribbon/stick assembly firmly inside the plastic container with more masking tape (this anchors the stick).
  • Have your child sit at a table and hold the plastic container steady with their helper hand to prevent it from sliding. This requires proximal stability.
  • Challenge the child to use their working hand to pinch the exposed end of the ribbon. Encourage them to use a strong, controlled pull and unwind motion to free the ribbon from the stick.
  • Once the ribbon is completely unwound, gently peel the starting tape off the stick and wrap a new ribbon tightly around the stick to play again.

Safety Tip:
Ribbon and small pieces of masking tape are small objects. Constant adult supervision is required to prevent choking hazards for children in this age group.

Tight Coil Stick Art

Tight Coil Stick Art

Steps:

  • Place one Craft Stick flat on the table. Use your helper hand to hold it steady and still.
  • Take a Pipe Cleaner. Use your dominant hand to twist it tightly around the stick. Coil the pipe cleaner snugly from end to end.
  • Continue wrapping new pipe cleaners until the entire Craft Stick is covered in a dense, fuzzy layer. Press the coils close together.
  • Choose one small sticker from the Plastic Container. Peel the sticker using only your thumb and pointer finger (pincer grasp).
  • Carefully press the sticker firmly onto the fuzzy, coiled surface of the stick. This requires precise aim and controlled force.
  • Cover the coiled stick with colorful stickers until you complete your masterpiece. Count how many stickers you placed.

Safety Tip:
Pipe cleaners and small stickers pose a choking hazard. Constant, direct adult supervision is required for children under 5 throughout this activity.
