  • Encourage your child to pick up the dry beans using only their thumb and pointer finger (pincer grasp).
  • Press the beans firmly into the wet glue line, following the shape until the entire path is covered. Press hard for heavy work!

Steps:

  • Tear the index cards into small, postage stamp-sized pieces. Encourage tearing with both hands for strong bilateral input.
  • Place all the torn pieces into the bowl. Cover the paper completely with water and let it soak for five minutes to create resistant pulp.
  • Adult Step: Cut a tight, narrow slot (about 1.5 inches long) into the container lid. Secure the lid shut completely with masking tape.
  • Reach into the bowl and gather a handful of wet paper pulp. Squeeze the pulp as hard as you can over the bowl to remove the water.
  • Hold the container firmly steady with your helper hand. Use your dominant hand to push the dense, wet pulp straight through the narrow slot. Repeat until the container is full!

Steps:

  • Layer 3 index cards together tightly to make one very thick building block. Secure the edges completely with masking tape.
  • Use a marker to draw 4 small target dots along one short edge of the layered block where you will insert the clips.
  • Take two finished layered blocks. Hold them firmly together with your helper hand to keep the pieces aligned and stable.
  • Pick up a paper clip using a strong pincer grasp (thumb and pointer finger). Push the clip through the marker target dots on both cards, joining the two blocks. This requires focused effort!
  • Continue connecting the layered cards end-to-end using the paper clips. Build a long, flexible tower or chain structure.
  • For extra heavy work, try tearing the finished paper clip chain apart after you finish building it.
  • Try creating a 3D structure by joining the blocks at different angles.

  • Ask your child to press down firmly on the bean bag with their helper hand to stabilize it.
  • Use the dominant hand to pick up a clothespin. Squeeze it open using a strong finger pinch.
  • Aim the open clothespin and clip one paper cup onto the side of the resistant bean bag. The bag should hold the cup securely.
  • Repeat the squeezing and clipping action until all the decorated cups are attached to the heavy anchor.

Steps:

  • Tear off a piece of aluminum foil slightly larger than an index card.
  • Place the card on the foil. Wrap the card tightly and squeeze hard to form a dense, stiff foil rod.
  • Use a marker to draw a narrow slit (about 1.5 inches long) onto a separate index card. (Adult step: Carefully cut the slit using scissors).
  • Hold the slotted card firmly steady with your helper hand on the table.
  • Pick up the foil rod. Aim the end at the slit and use a continuous twisting motion to screw the rod through the resistant opening.
  • Twist the rod all the way through the slot to connect the two cards. Repeat to build a creative 3D foil sculpture!
