Cotton Balls Music

Purpose:

This is a great activity to do in a group setting. However, it can be done with only one child as well. The goal of this activity is to use the clothespins to pass the cotton balls without letting them pile up in front of the child when the music stops.

Skills: Crossing Midline(?) The ability to move ones hands, feet, and eyes not only together, but across and to the other side of the body., Finger Strength(?) The ability to move ones hands, feet, and eyes not only together, but across and to the other side of the body., Pincer Grasp(?) The pincer grasp is the coordination of the index finger and thumb to hold an item. Each time you hold a pen or button your shirt, you’re using the pincer grasp. Pincer grasp is a hand grasp that develops around the time a baby is 8-10 months old. This grasp corresponds to the time a baby is beginning to feed themselves finger foods. The pincer grasp is needed in order to grasp a small item, pinch it between the index and thumb and bring it to the mouth.
Materials: Clothespins, Cotton Balls, Tongs

Have the children sit in a circle.

Give each child a clothespin and a cotton ball.

Instruct the children to pick up and drop the cotton ball on the lap of the child sitting to their right when the music starts.

When the music stops, each child should pick up his cotton ball using the clothespin and raise their hand.

You can make it into a game by giving an additional cotton ball to a child who raised their hand but did not have a cotton ball caught on his clothespin.

The child with the least number of cotton balls at the end of the game wins.

Game Variations:

  • Instead of using a clothespin, you might want to use tongs or tweezers.
  • If you are playing with 1 child, you may want to just use one cotton ball and see who has it when the music stops.
  • After a few times passing the cotton balls to the right, switch and have the passing go left.
